Community Event

Coe College, and Kohawk Tennis, was host to the first annual Fitness, Fun & Philanthropy community event this past Saturday, October 13th.  Over fifty kids from the Cedar Rapids, and surrounding area, made their way to the Clark Racquet Center for a fun-filled and educational morning.

The children (ages 4-13) were separated into small groups and advanced through five 15 minute stations:  Zumba, nutrition, an obstacle course, philanthropy and on-court tennis activities.  Highlights from the event:
-  The children dropping tootsie rolls into empty tennis ball cans to cast their vote for the charity to donate their "Change for Change" money to; the Cedar Valley Humane Society was the winner.  This was done after the term, Philanthropy, was defined and discussed.
-  A nutrition segment in the Player's Lounge where the kids had to guess the SuperFoods hidden within various snacks.....hummus (beans), smoothie (spinach, blueberries), muffins (pumpkin), pretzel dip (yogurt).  The benefits of each of these SuperFoods were also discussed.
-  The rain!  And Head Coach, Eric Rodgers, dealing with the start of a flood on the indoor courts.
-  Assistant Coach, Kris Diehl, attempting to redirect fellow Assistant Coach, Brad Fenter, to the CORRECT site to recruit at in St. Louis, MO.  Whilst running the event!
-  Kohawk Tennis player, and certified Zumba instructor, Tai Lucero, working with the kids in the upstairs aerobics room.

Video footage from the event can be found on YouTube.  There are also a few pictures on the Coe College Tennis Facebook page.

With the Van Metre Family Charitable Foundation as a sponsor, Coe was able to offer this event at no charge to the public.  The Van Metre (Susie, Abby and Holland) and Voropaeva (Natasha, Anya and Sasha) families were instrumental in making this event a success; a special thank you to each of them!  The following Kohawk Tennis players also played a key role in making this event possible, and the execution of:  Laura Birky, Tai Lucero, Diannah Watson, Curtis Newman, Mark Kroll, Shade Hannum, Tamara Washington and Jordan Ferree.

Torrential rainfall on Sunday caused further problems in the Racquet Center.  Emmie showed up in her rain jacket to help......
