CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Coe College Director of Athletics John Chandler has announced the hiring of Kris Diehl as the new head coach of the Kohawk women's tennis program. Diehl takes over for Eric Rodgers, who will focus on coaching the men's program.

A graduate of Northern Illinois University, Diehl came to Coe in the spring of 2010 as an assistant men's and women's coach. The Iowa City native was named the Most Valuable Player for the Huskies her sophomore season. As a junior, she posted a team-best 17 doubles wins and 15 singles victories as she earned the Coaches Award. She was also a member of the Northern Illinois soccer team her senior season, earning a varsity letter in both sports.

"We are pleased to have someone with the background that Kris has leading our program," Chandler said. "By bringing in Kris to coach the women's team, it will allow both her and Coach Rodgers to focus on one team apiece. This was the next logical move as the Kohawks continue to compete on the regional and national stage."
The Kohawks have won three-straight Iowa Conference Championships, with Diehl as the top assistant for all three. Coe has had four-straight Iowa Conference MVPs, while they have also had eight of the last nine. This past fall, Diehl was named the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year for the first time.

"I have enjoyed, and learned a great deal, over the past five years as part of the Kohawk tennis program," Diehl said.  "For this, I give credit to the numerous players, fellow assistant coaches Rob Rye and Brad Fenter, and most importantly, coach Rodgers.  Without the tutelage of Coach Rodgers, I would not be prepared for the task at hand. I look forward to what is ahead for Kohawk tennis and feel honored to have been given a greater role within.  The women's program has made strides in the past five years. I am excited to lead the players and program through the terrain of a continued climb.  The emphasis will remain on player and team growth, on and off the court."
Rodgers has been named the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year five times on the women's side and six times on the men's side. The Kohawk men have also won three-straight Iowa Conference Championships and nine since joining the league.

"The transition from one head coach to two separate head coaches has been a discussion point between myself and John Chandler for the better part of the past 10 years," Rodgers said. "The time for change is now as both the men and women have firmly established themselves as consistent regionally competitive teams; requiring an extensive amount of training and play during the spring semester. The job is too large for one person. We are fortunate to have coach Kris available and willing to take on extra responsibilities. She brings great leadership and the abilities to further the success of the women's program. I hope to be able to continue to contribute to the women's team as coach Kris deems fit."

The 2014-15 campaign kicks off Aug. 31, as the Coe women travel to Lake Forest, Ill. to face Lake Forest and Edgewood. Coe will open the home portion of the schedule Sept. 6, as the Kohawks host Buena Vista and Wisconsin-Oshkosh at Clark Racquet Center.

NCAA Individual Singles

Noah fell to Avery Schober of the University of the South in a lengthy round of 32 match on Thursday afternoon by a score of 26 61 64. Noah had his chances, especially on an inside-in FH at 44 deuce in the third. But really, was never able to find his A game on a consistent basis. Kudos to his opponent whose unique style of play likely kept Noah from shifting into what Brad refers to as "Big Dog" Tennis.

Was good to be at the NCAA Final site again. Thanks, Noah!

2015 Finals will be in Mason, OH, near Cincinnati at the site of the ATP/WTA Pro event.

And the sojourn home has begun. Visited some Utah National Parks on the trip out. A stop in Denver on the return. Here's  a snapshot.....

Classroom Success

Tai Lucero, Amy Sebastian and Daken Starkenburg were named to the Spring Semester Dean's List at Coe College. Students must have attained a 3.91gpa to qualify.

In addition, Tai, Amy and Riley Galbraith were named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District Team. Coe and Trinity(TX) were the only two schools with multiple selections to the District 8 Team.

Busy days.....

....for Coach Kris these days despite the end of the tennis seasons. Yesterday, Kris earned her first Gold Tennis Ball(awarded to National Champions in USTA play in all age groups) by winning the Women's 35 National Indoor doubles championship in Chicago, Illinois. Kris also finished 2nd in singles play(she is STILL furious about coming that close) and earning her 2nd Silver Tennis Ball.

.....busy for Noah Sprinkel as he prepares for the D3 Singles Championsips which begin Thursday in California. Coach Brad worked him so hard this week that ice baths were the order of the day! Brad and Noah fly into LA Ontario next Tuesday where I will pick them up. Yes, I opted to drive to California so as to be able to explore a bit of the National Parks in Utah. Noah's progress can be monitored at

Men's NCAA

Like the Women, the Coe Men's Tennis Team journeyed to St Louis, for the opening rounds of the NCAA Team tournament. Paired against Earlham College for the second consecutive year, Coe staged a rally after trailing 2-1 after the doubles portion. Building on momentum established by Zack Decker and Sean Stokstad's #3 doubles win, Coe added quick wins from Mike Janssen and Alex Bernt to move ahead of the Quakers 3-2. Riley Galbraith avenged last year's defeat and moved Coe to 4-2, needing one point to clinch. All of the remaining matches went to three sets, and Sean Stokstad was able to stave off leg cramps and pick up the final point for Coe at the #4 spot.

Saturday's matchup was a severe challenge as Coe drew the #2 ranked Washington Bears. WashU quickly proved why they are ranked that high, sweeping the doubles despite a challenge from the Coe #3 pair. The 0-3 deficit proved too much to overcome as WashU add victories at #5 and #6 to wrap up the win before Noah and Riley could finish their competitive matches.

With the conclusion of Team play for the year, Coe says good-bye to seven seniors who contributed greatly to the Kohawk growth over the past four years. This group was able to halt the five year IIAC drought and tack on three consecutive titles of their own. We wish nothing but success for Tyler Wilson, Alex Leovic, Daken Starkenburg, Alex Klaas, Jeff Damisch, Sean Stokstad, and Mike Janssen.

One important task remains undone. Noah Sprinkel has been selected as one of 32 singles players who will vie for the honor of being the top player in NCAA D3 in 2014. Play will commence on Thursday, May 22 on the campus of the Claremont Colleges in California. Draws and schedule of play will be released on Wednesday, May 21st. Women's NCAA

The women were defeated by the Pioneers of Grinnell College this morning.

A 3-0 deficit following very competitive and skilled doubles (on both sides of the net) proved too difficult to overcome.

Proud of the ladies for a season of growth, fun (hopefully) and sportsmanship.  Very proud of Tai and Hoff for the 4 years they invested in Kohawk Tennis.  Tai leaves us with the most wins in the history of women's tennis at Coe; edging Michelle Schupbach, her 3 year Doubles partner who set a very high bar for Tai to surpass.  Hoff leaves us with the 6th most wins in school history.  Tai and Hoff both contributed heavily to the "success" and strides that Coe Tennis has made these past few years.....as a Team, and each individual within.  You will be missed!!

NCAA Preview

The NCAA has spoken! Both Teams will be playing in the City of St. Louis, Missouri in the Regional hosted by Washington University. The Coe squads, Men & Women, are seeded 4th in the six team events.

The Women will have a re-match from April 18th with Grinnell College. Coe came out ahead in that encounter by the slimmest of margins, 5-4. I would expect this match will be more of the same with close matches at all nine flights. Should the Kohawks triumph, they would feed into top seeded, and #9 nationally, Washington University.

The Men will also have a re-match of sorts. In 2013 Coe played Earlham College in the NCAA tournament, escaping with a 5-3 win. Earlham returns virtually their entire roster and easily captured the Heartland Conference. I expect doubles to be the key in this dual. Whichever school has a 2-1 advantage will be favored to go on to victory. The Winner advances to a Saturday date with top seeded and #2 nationally ranked Bears from Washington University.

Women will open play at 9am on Thursday, Men to follow at 9am on Friday. All results will be posted online at ncaa.com or you can follow us on Twitter @kohawktennis

Onward to NCAA's

Well......another season(#25) has come and gone. As usual, oh so quickly. Pleased to report that BOTH the Men's and Women's teams, not only won the Iowa Conference regular season title, but both won the AQ tournament and advance to next week's opening rounds of the NCAA team tournament.

I am extremely proud of Coach Kris and what the Women's team was able to accomplish this year. Initially billed as a possible rebuilding year as 8 of 11 roster players were in their 1st or 2nd year of college play, Coach Kris, Tai, Hoff and Jordan were able to provide leadership, encouragement and direction. After dramatically winning 5-4 against Luther in Decorah in September, the AQ match was much less dramatic with a 5-2 win on April 26th at the friendly confines of the Clark Racquet Center.

The Men's season was expected to be good. And it was. Despite the player's claims as the cause of my increasingly white hair, this Spring was the least stressful tennis season of my 29 years of collegiate coaching. Why? Because of the daily professionalism displayed by our roster of 18 men. For a group of 18-22 year old college students, their focus, drive and performance from our January start to our May finish  was impressive. It was a pleasure to be along for the journey!

And now we await word from the NCAA on the destinations and opponents for both squads. Play will begin either Thursday, May 8th or Friday May 9th. My best guess is the Women will travel to Chicago, St Louis or Indiana. The Men? Guessing Wisconsin, or St Louis. Details to be released by the NCAA on their Championships website tomorrow evening.
