Coach Murphy Moving On!

Mark Murphy, the Associate Head Coach here at Coe, has been offered, and accepted the position of Women's Tennis Coach/Tennis Facilities Director at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Like Coe, Kalamazoo is a NCAA D3 school and their facilities serve as the host for the USTA Boy's 18 and 16 and under National Championships every August. Coach Murphy will do a great job for the Hornets and we all wish him the best! (Except on April 23rd when Coe will take on Kalamazoo)

The Pre-Season ITA Rankings are out as of November 10th. The Kohawk Women's Tennis team received the #26 spot in the National D3 Team Rankings. This marked the 12th consecutive time Coe has been ranked nationally. The next rankings will be published in mid-March.

In the Central Region the Coe Women's Team was #9, and the Kohawk Men were #12! In Singles play Hannah Jensen was #23, while Greg Janssen was #25. The Schupbach Sisters, Andrea & Michelle, were #12 in Doubles.

Tennis Channel

During our down time between seasons(Men begin on 1/17/10, Women on 2/22/10) I like watching the live matches shown on the Tennis Channel. They show a lot of Men's and Women's matches from the Indoor European Circuits. It is a great way for me(and you!) to see how the professionals are playing. It is on the Pro Circuit where "cutting edge" tactics and shots get revealed. I learn a lot that is applicable to the two Coe College teams. And the announcers are a lot less talkative than those you find on network TV!

Missouri

I'm in Springfield, Missouri watching the Girl's State Tennis Tourney.

That's irrelevant. The amazing thing is the Cooper Tennis Complex. A public facility, 18+ outdoor courts AND 12 indoor courts. Just a beautiful facility. Residents of Springfield are very lucky!

Men's NCAA

I'm in Cleveland, Ohio, assisting with the site visit for the 2010 Men's Tennis Championship. This year I am serving as Chair of the D3 Tennis Committee.

Oberlin College will be the host. Oberlin is located just west of downtown Cleveland.

LOST!

Give Luther a lot of credit. They turned our previous sweep of doubles into one of their own. The ensuing 3-0 deficit was too much to overcome.

My take? I cannot wait until May 1st when we do this all over again!

On to the Finals!

The Kohawks advanced to the finals with wins at #1 & #6 singles to go along with sweep of all three doubles matches.

Michelle Schupbach & Coach Rodgers at ITA's

Women's IIAC Team Championship

As expected, by virtue of their unblemished W-L mark, the Kohawks received the unanimous top seed for the IIAC Team Championships. Coe will face the winner of the Central College/Cornell College matchup Saturday morning(10/10) at the Klotz Tennis courts on the West Campus of the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Luther College, Wartburg College, and Loras College are the other schools qualifying for play.

Men's ITA Recap

Greg Janssen's three victories on Friday highlighted the ITA tourney. Greg fell Saturday to Gustavus' #1 in a three and a half hour contest. All three Coe doubles pairs(Janssen/Khristenko, Stegemann/Tucker, King/Newman) won at least one round of doubles in the rain-marred event. Look for the Kohawks to be a factor regionally during the Winter/Spring dual match season, as FB Kicker/Soccer Forward Elliot Rausa rejoins the Team. Over half the Team was in on Monday working on their games on their own!

Men's ITA

Greg Janssen thru to round of 16. For the 3rd time in his career Greg Janssen has advanced to the round of 16 despite never having been seeded in the top 16. Quite an accomplishment! As of this moment Ryan King is on court trying to join Greg in the round of 16. Saturday's ITA schedule? Two rounds of singles and FOUR rounds of doubles.

Ladies Win!

Despite the dreary conditions, the Women's Tennis team was able vanquish the Rams of Cornell by an 8-1 count. The Cornell lineup was full of young and talented players. The Rams will be a factor in IIAC in the years to come.

Coe will be the top seed next Saturday in the Conference Tournament.

Thursday

Well, the guys took off for Minnesota & their ITA. Coach Murphy will be posting as he learns results. Being at five indoor sites will make his job difficult!

Cedar Rapids was very wet today with rain and tomorrow looks to be more of the same. The Women's team journeys to Cornell College to take on the Rams in what promises to be a close match. Coe will be down one starter & the Cornell indoor courts will provide a challenge themselves. Look for a 5-4 result one way or another.

Oh, and I somehow ended up stringing 10 racquets today. Too many!

Getting ready to leave for Men's ITA today. The weather looks poor and may cause lots of trouble on the largest ITA draw in history. GO KOHAWKS!

9/29 Practice

Today we held the seasonal Mixed Doubles competition as Coach Murphy and I scrambled the Men's and Women's rosters to create the tourney. Jonathan Roger, who won the inaugural tourney last February with since graduated Molly Fiala, teamed with Michelle Schupbach and successfully defended his Mixed title with a final round victory over Hannah Jensen and Scott Stegemann. Hannah was also the runner-up last February. Prateek Haralalka and Andrea Schupbach took 3rd place.

ITA Day III

Only one match remains! Michelle Schupbach will play in the consolation singles final against Amy Siemons of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Saturday, the Schupbach Sisters advanced to the doubles quarterfinals, losing to Doyle and Jueng of Carleton. Megan Fiala won the consolation singles of the Fall Invite with an 8-3 victory over Jenny Dallenbach of Wartburg College.

ITA Day II

Well, Day I ended after 13 hours, 13 singles matches, lots of driving between indoor sites & finally, three well-played doubles matches.

Today, Day II, Hannah Jensen & Andrea Schupbach attempt to advance through to the semi-finals. They will each have defeat two very good foes.

AND, all three of the Kohawk's doubles pairs will try to get through THREE rounds of doubles.

9/23

Still warm here in Cedar Rapids, leaves falling on outdoor courts though! Got those cleaned up, & we had the guys out today & the ladies inside. Reason? 60% chance of rain in Minnesota on Friday. Thought I would let the ladies strike a rhythm for a couple of hours indoors!

We are waiting for the draws from the ITA Regional to arrive. I think Coe will have two top eight singles seeds & a top four doubles seed.

Can't wait to get up there and play against the best in the area!

Tuesday 9/22

First day of Fall! We had two good practices. Falling leaves & early morning rain rendered a couple courts unplayable, so the guys went inside for singles with Coach Murph while I helped the ladies drill out on the outdoor courts. Ladies all hit well! Coach Murph said the singles work was coming along.

Women to ITA this weekend. Men the next weekend.
