Coe's Resnick, Wartburg's Beardsley, BVU's Henningsen Named IIAC Athletes of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Coe College tennis player Haley Resnick (Bettendorf, Iowa / Davenport Assumption), Wartburg College golfer Rochelle Beardsley (Peosta, Iowa / Western Dubuque) and Buena Vista University football player Jalen Henningsen (Alta, Iowa / Alta-Aurelia) have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 11, 2015. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in eight fall sports.

Women's Tennis — Haley Resnick, Coe College, Bettendorf, Iowa / Davenport Assumption
Resnick, a sophomore, successfully defended her Flight A singles title at the IIAC Women's Tennis Individual Tournament with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over No. 2-seeded Arantxa Martinez of Dubuque in a rematch of last year's Flight A final won by Resnick in three sets. Resnick trailed 5-2 in the second set before rallying to win. The title was the fifth-straight in Flight A Singles by a Kohawk. She also teamed with Laura Birky to win the Flight A doubles crown. Entering the tournament as the No. 2 seeds, the tandem defeated top-seeded Maggie Helms and Hailey Johnson of Luther, 8-5, in the final. It was the eighth-straight year Coe has won the Iowa Conference Flight A Doubles championship. (IIAC Female Athlete of the Week)

Coe sweeps Iowa Conference Flight A Singles & Doubles

Haley Resnick earned titles in Flight A Singles and Doubles.


CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the fifth-straight year, the Coe College women's tennis team has swept the top spot in Flight A Singles and Doubles at the Iowa Conference Championships.
Coe opened the day with a semifinalist on each side of the bracket in Flight A Singles. On the top half, top-seeded Haley Resnick beat fourth-seeded Maggie Helms of Luther 6-2, 6-2. On the bottom half of the bracket, second-seeded Arantxa Martinez of Dubuque beat third-seeded Amy Sebastian 7-5, 6-0. Sebastian trailed 1-0 in the third-place match when she retired due to injury. In the championship match, Resnick beat Martinez 6-3, 7-6 (4) for her second-straight title. Resnick trailed 5-2 in the second set before rallying to win. The title was the fifth-straight in Flight A Singles by a Kohawk.
In doubles play, Resnick and Laura Birky were seeded second. In the semifinals, they beat Luther's Cychosz and Pressler 8-3. In the championship match, they were faced with Luther's top-seeded pair of Helms and Johnson. The Kohawk pair earned the win, defeating Luther's top duo 8-3. It was the eighth-straight year Coe has won the Iowa Conference Flight A Doubles championship.
The IIAC Championships wraps up the fall season for the Kohawk women. Coe will return to action on Feb. 20, as they travel to NCAA Division I Creighton. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. in Omaha.

Brady Anderson earned runner-up honors in singles at the ITA Midwest Regional.

Anderson takes runner-up honors at ITA Midwest Regional


SAINT PETER, Minn. - Sophomore Brady Anderson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) advanced to the championship match of the ITA Midwest Region Singles bracket Sunday morning.
Anderson had a tall task in the semifinals during his first match of the morning, as he faced top-seeded Jake Humphreys of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Humphreys won the ITA Midwest Regional last season. Humphreys won the first set 6-2, but it was all Anderson after that. Anderson jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set before evening the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. Anderson rolled through the final set, beating Humphreys 6-1 to advance to the championship match.
In the championship match, Anderson faced second-seeded Mohanad Al Houni of host Gustavus. Al Houni won the first game, but Anderson evened it at 1-1. Al Houni then won three-straight games to take a 4-1 lead before winning the set 6-2. In the second set, Al Houni led 3-2 before winning the final three games for a 6-2 victory.
The ITA Midwest Regional wraps up the fall season for the Kohawks. Coe returns to action Jan. 30, as the Kohawks host the University of Chicago.
