Post-match HC Observations

A few thoughts on a variety of topics, while all of Kohawk Tennis awaits Coach Brad's latest chapter of his forthcoming book.

.....Cornell challenged the Ladies yesterday. Most courts had an above average Shot Tolerance, and the ones who did not, had very good Shot Quality. Nice to have to play well!

.....Remember my comment about first-years developing quickly? Some of that development shows up in a temporarily negative form! First-year's are very, very susceptible to a state of physical paralysis. You know, where the brain over-analyzes and "freezes" the entire body. Had a little of that. Good thing it is temporary!

.....Of course, even the top players can spend time in "paralysis". Especially when away from competitive matches for a period of time. Having been "frozen" before, the experienced players can escape  and  thaw out before too much score-keeping damage is done. Had a little of that also.

.....On Sunday the Norse arrive. Brief history lesson: 2012 is the 31st year of Women's Tennis in the Iowa Conference. Luther has won 25 titles. Coe has won 4. Of course, Coe has only been in the IIAC since 1997! I'm excited to see the packed bleachers for the 2pm match!

.....22 players is a lot. A challenge to be able to develop individuals and the Team at the same time. Coach Brad is interjecting a lot of new drills, which is helping. It will be imperative that I manage the court schedule to maximize development. I will.

.....A 16 player Compass Draw gets underway tomorrow when the rain stops. All coaches eager to see the Men compete, even if only against one another. I am confident that "unexpected" results will be the norm.

.....Formula for winning a Men's Grand Slam? Find a youngster with world-class speed. Teach them the requisite racquet skills. Play enough matches to be a demon of a competitor. Hit service aces, and minimize risk-taking in shot selection. Ladies and Gentlemen......Andy Murray, US Open Champion!

.....And finally, Kohawk Tennis Coaches each ardently follow Major League Baseball. Each has their favorite team, and as of today, September 13th, all are headed to the playoffs! My Cincinnati Reds, Brad's Texas Rangers, and Kris' Atlanta Braves! Although Coach Kris' Braves better win a few games this weekend!
