PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College women's tennis
team didn't let high winds and low temperatures get in their way of
advancing in the IIAC Tournament Friday, as Coe sent three singles
players and two doubles teams to the semifinals.
In Flight A Singles, freshman Haley Resnick (Bettendorf, Iowa/Assumption), seeded second in the bracket, beat Wartburg's Melissa Davis 6-2, 6-0 in the second round after a first round bye. In the quarterfinals, Resnick beat Luther's Adrianna DePaolis 6-2, 6-3. In the semifinals, Resnick will face teammate, senior Jordan Ferree (Pekin, Ill./Pekin). Unseeded entering the bracket, Ferree beat Luther's Lauren Welch 6-4, 6-4 in the first round before downing fifth-seeded Angie Allgood of Central 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (4). Ferree advanced to the semifinals with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over teammate, sophomore Sarah Lasecki (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy). Lasecki beat Luther's Olivia Heitz 6-2, 6-4 in the first round before knocking off third-seeded Katherine Ross of Wartburg 6-2, 6-1 in the second round.
On the top half of the bracket, sixth-seeded junior Amy Sebastian (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) advanced to the semifinals with a pair of victories. After a first round bye, Sebastian beat Luther's Jenna Myers 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (4). Sebastian then knocked off fourth-seeded Maggie Helms of Luther 3-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (5). Sebastian will face top-seeded Arantxa Martinez of Dubuque in the semifinals.
In the doubles bracket, Ferree and junior Laura Birky (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) entered as the top seed with a first round bye. In the second round, they defeated Luther's Johnson and Myers 8-6. In the semifinals, they'll face fourth-seeded Allgood and Davis of Central. On the bottom half of the bracket, Lasecki and Resnick beat Loras' Rainey and Clements 8-0 in the first round before knocking off third-seeded Helms and Heitz of Luther 9-8 (5). In the semifinals, they'll face second-seeded Kuethe and Davis of Wartburg.
