From the Metro Sports Report
Tiedt stresses wellness with Coe tennis
Kris Tiedt has focused her life on the wellness of others and now as the head women’s tennis coach at Coe she can do just that. Tiedt played tennis at Northern Illinois University. She still plays in league tournaments in the area and national tournaments.
Tiedt served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Coe under Eric Rodgers for five years, but now she's leading the women's program and Rodgers is leading the men's program.
Tiedt also works as the strength and conditioning coach for men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's golf.
Wellness is important to her.
“As you climb the different levels of tennis, physicality becomes that much more important,” she said.
The tennis department tries to make sure all its players give one hour off the court for every hour on the court. Tiedt said the team does this willingly because they understand that wellness is important and they see the return from that.
“I put more thought into big-picture items in terms of not only where I want the team to be on the court but also off the court,” she said.
Tiedt enjoys serving as the head coach and led the Kohawks to another successful season. Haley Resnick won the Iowa Conference singles title this past Saturday. Laura Birky and Jordan Ferree won the doubles title, topping teammates Sarah Lasecki and Resnick in the finals.
“Whether it be academics, careers, and happiness in general, I see myself more as helping them try to grow as people, not just tennis players,” she said.
Tiedt attributes the team's success to a variety of factors. She praised how Rodgers built the program for 25 years, the culture that that’s been established, the work ethic of the players, and the fact they love tennis and want to be better on a daily basis.
Tiedt is thankful for her leaders on the team like Ferree.
“Her work ethic and time investment have set the tone," said Tiedt. "She leads very much in that respect.
“We have a four [person] strong junior class, so essentially every time we step on the court we have five leaders.
“I consider my role to help them grow as people and tennis players. That makes you a mentor and coach first and a friend second.
“They have fun when they are together. It is neat and rewarding to me to watch them bond and have those connections with those in their class and their team.
“They are a group of ladies that likes or loves tennis, depending on the day. Most of the time they love it. They have a really good perspective on trying to improve or get a little bit better each day.
“I think they are part motivated by results, by the healthy rivalries that exist within the conference, and each other and their levels. [They are] always motivated to return to the NCAA tournament each year.”
Tiedt joked that even trips to Dairy Queen motivate them.
“My experiences in total have made me into the person I am today," said Tiedt. "My being a parent helps me being a coach more than [being an attorney]. My competing does the same.
“There is a reason I coach instead of wear a business suit. I get to spend more time outside than not, I’m on a college campus where there’s energy and I get to run, jump and play. I like sports more than [business] skirts.
“I don't feel like I have a job. I always tell people that every day I get to run jump and play. Every day is different. It brings new and different challenges.”

Vic Braden on Characteristics of a Champion
Vic Braden died last week after spending a lifetime in Tennis. Lauded as an innovator, educator, researcher, and entertainer, Braden was also an accomplished player during the 1950's. Below are his characteristics of Champions derived from a lifetime in the game of Tennis.
excerpted from Colette Lewis' article on Vic Braden from ZooTennis
excerpted from Colette Lewis' article on Vic Braden from ZooTennis
- The champions have had a goal of becoming a big-time winner at a relatively early age.
- There also was nothing that seemed to be able to deter them from reaching their goal.
- They were keen analysts when observing the strengths and weaknesses in potential opponents.
- They seemed to have the ability to analyze their own game accurately.
- They seemed to be able to analyze quickly when they were getting the right information from coaches.
- When most players were calling it a day on the practice court, future champions were just getting warmed up.
- Champions talked more about hating to lose than basking in the glory of victories.
- The top players seemed to have a unique ability to focus on execution in tight situations rather than worrying about the outcome of the point, or the match.
- Champions seemed to enjoy the pressure of tiebreakers rather than fearing it.
- Champions gave away nothing: they would beat an injured player as fast as they could.

BREAKING NEWS!
Kohawks Sweep A Flight Honors at IIACs
The Kohawks dominated at the IIAC A Flight Individual tourney in Pella, Iowa, despite 2014 being one of the most balanced and competitive league races in many a year. First-year Haley Resnick, seeded 2nd, revenged her only IIAC loss with a 12-10 Match Tiebreaker final round win, saving five match points en route. Teammates Amy Sebastian and Jordan Ferree rounded out the top four singles players.
In doubles play Jordan Ferree teamed with Laura Birky to edge teammates Sarah Lasecki and Haley Resnick in the all-Kohawk final 8-5. The top Kohawk pairs advanced by beating the #1 teams from Central College and Wartburg College.
The Kohawks return to dual match play on February 28th in the friendly confines of the Clark Racquet Center where they will host Kalamazoo College, a top 10 Central Region squad coached by Coe alum Mark Murphy(98)

WT IIAC Individual Tournament
It's cold! And windy! Expect the same today.
Great showing from all 12 Kohawks yesterday!
Semifinals for Flight A Singles and Flight A Doubles today.
On one half of the Singles draw, Amy Sebastian will face off against top seeded Arantxa Martinez of UD. On the other half the draw, Haley Resnick will play Jordan Ferree, thus, ensuring at least one Kohawk in the Final!
In Flight A Doubles, Haley/Sarah and top seeded Laura/Jordan remain in the draw, and on opposite halves. Laura/Jordan will play 4th seeded Central #1. Haley/Sarah will play 3rd seeded Wartburg #1.
The highlight of the day for me personally was watching Jordan and Sarah battle each other in a Flight A Quarterfinal. Pure grit and mutual respect on both sides of the net! Plus, I finally got a break from coaching. Will admit that it felt much like a team match (awesome!) with Kohawks always on court, and fighting. Molly's presence was a necessity; she provided guidance and warmth (her vehicle being used at the park site, and delivery of hot chocolate) all day!
Other highlights include:
- Molly arising early Friday morning to drive 3 additional Kohawks to Pella.
- Sarah defeating Luther #4 and 3rd seeded Wartburg #1 (avenging an ITA loss from last year) en route to her match with Jordan.
- Tam & Diannah defeating Luther's #3 Doubles pair.
- 6th seeded Amy clinching 3rd set tiebreakers in both the Round of 16 and Quarterfinals (over Luther's #1; the 4th seed).
- Laura defeating Wartburg's #2 strong freshman (Kuethe).
- Jamie advancing to the 3rd round of Flight B Singles.
- Jordan defeating Central's top player and 5th seeded, Angie Allgood, in a 3rd set tiebreaker.
- Quarterfinal matches clinched by Jordan/Laura (8-6) and Haley/Sarah (9-8) over Luther #2 and Luther #1 (3rd seed) respectively.
- The team and parent support/attitude throughout (despite less than ideal weather conditions).
- A filling team dinner at Applebee's, with memorable quotes galore!
