ENJOY!

March Madness

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but its March. And to be perfectly honest it’s really close to being April already. For those of us above the 39th parallel that means it’s almost time to start defrosting from winter, say hello to that bright thing in the sky called the sun and start reducing food portions because soon that physique won’t be hidden under 5 layers of clothing. For everyone else this is Tourney time. That’s right, the NCAA Basketball tournament is going on now and so is all the loss of worker productivity that goes with it.

Not now chief. I got some serious basketball watching to do

I usually refrain from getting involved in any March Madness festivities on principle: it goes into April! Change the name or shorten the format! This year, against my better judgment, I filled out a bracket to test my mettle against other Kohawks and the nation. Now that the first rounds are over it’s time to face the music and hash out what I’ve learned so far from my bracket-filling-out experience.

I Picked the Wrong School in Kansas

I picked Kansas to get to the championship because I’m unoriginal and figured somebody had to make the final, it might as well be Kansas. Where I ran into trouble was in picking the other schools from the state. In my mind I faced a decision where I could only take one more school from Kansas because the basketball gods must be pleased and they always want a sacrifice from the heartland. In looking at past histories it seemed like a good idea to give the nod to the team that was seeded 4th in their region (K-State) over the team that was seeded 9th (Wichita State). Well as we all know K-State took a 30 minute break from the game while LaSalle scored at will before remembering there were no more games after this one. Of course, the furious comeback only served to upset me more when K-State managed to both get blown out and lose a heartbreaker in the same game. I would have rather they didn’t toy with me at all.

The Wildcats and my frayed emotions

Wichita State, on the other hand, was supposed to lose first round but noooooooo. They decided to not only win their first game but also flip me the bird in the second round by beating number 1 seed Gonzaga. I could just feel them smirking at me as they rained 3 pointers down on Gonzaga’s head in the best aerial bombardment I’ve seen since Nam. Thanks for nothing Gonzaga.

Never Put Faith in the Mountain West

The Mountain West was lauded for getting 5 schools in the tournament this year. I mistakenly took that as a sign that those schools were good at basketball and have been paying the price for my hubris ever since. Colorado State was the only school who read the script and played according to my plan. Win first round and lose second round. That’s the way this is supposed to go! UNLV and San Diego State decided to forgo the proper script and go rouge in their first round games in an apparent attempt to destroy my bracket: they succeeded. I picked Oklahoma to beat San Diego. Do you know how difficult it was for me, a guy born and raised in Texas, to root for Oklahoma? I just threw up a little in my mouth. I spent 2 hours of bile inducing fandom in a failed attempt to bring Oklahoma the win. Ohhaoghoagadl;s. Sorry , I threw up a little more violently just then.

Oklahomaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

None of this can compare to how New Mexico betrayed me. When picking New Mexico’s first round game I almost went with Harvard as a joke because those Cambridge boys must be smart enough to win a game. After wavering on my decision a little I picked New Mexico to win that game. And since I picked them for one win I immediately channeled my inner Ricky Bobby and put New Mexico all the way in the Elite 8. If you’re not first your last and I certainly hadn’t picked New Mexico to get last. It was only after the game started that I remembered how absurd it was to follow the advice of a fictional movie father who was high when he uttered his famous life lessons.

If You Want to be a Winner, Have a Hot Wife/Girlfriend

Remember in 2006 when Marcos Baghdatis burst onto the tennis scene and reached the Australian Open Final? I’m going to guess you don’t because the dirty camera men wouldn’t stop panning over to the player’s box to show his girlfriend. Every so often they would remember there was a tennis match going on and show a random point before going back to zooming in on her. For a more recent incident just look at the BCS National Championship game between Alabama and that other school I don’t remember. I was a little confused there was even a game going on from all the coverage of AJ McCarron’s girlfriend being shown. The janitors had to bring in a shopvac to get up all the drool in the press box emanating from Brent Musberger.

Well it’s happened again. Florida Gulf Coast has become the first 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16, and all that’s been done with the program being post-season eligible for only 2 years. This may be all fine and dandy but there’s a bigger more inspiring story here: the coach has a really hot wife! This is the vibe I’m getting from all the media coverage. “It’s really great how hard you guys have worked this year to become the Cinderella story of the tournament. But now let’s talk about how hot the coach’s wife is. Would you like to dedicate this tournament run to her?”

We sure would

I now know how to accomplish all my goals. All I need to do is find a REALLY good looking woman, like supermodel hot, and ask her to date me (marriage is a plus). Once this little task is accomplished I’m fairly secure in saying I’ll have the US Open wrapped up by 2014.

Go Duke!

Video Footage - Scream & Shout!

Riley Galbraith's video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0n5N6IpGCM

Conversation overheard in practice last week delineated here to inform the rest of you just HOW smart Brad ACTUALLY is (or so he tells us).  :)

For the record, Daken IS that smart.

Brad: Keep going after that serve. Don't slow your racket down.
Daken: Am I slowing it down?
Brad: Yeah. You know what the Magnus Effect is?
Daken: It describes how a ball moves through a liquid.
Brad: That's right. So you know that if you slow your racket down you won't impart as much spin on the ball. And if you don't have that spin, the ball won't drag the air around it to create that area of high pressure above and low pressure below it.
Daken: Okay, I like it. Magnus Effect.
Brad: You're a physics guy so I figured you would appreciate that.

Mid-Semester Report

It’s Thursday once again and just like the annual sun rise each morning I am here to deliver my magnificent rays of judgment. The NCAA tournament started today, but that’s a story for next week in which I will detail how my bracket is dominating the tennis team like a despot in a diamond rich country. This week is a time to sit back and reflect on everything I have done so far this year; a mid-semester report card of sorts. I’ve written a number of blog posts in the past few months and now it’s time to check on the progress of all my endeavors.

I started the year off by talking about my NewYear’s Resolutions which included having lucid dreams and accomplishing a free standing hand-stand pushup. If we look at the past 3 weeks I can confidently state that I have attempted… excuse me just a second…………………….Okay, if we include the pushup I just attempted I’ve done one. All right, so I’ve been slacking on this one a little bit. That puts me on par with approximately 100% of you and your New Year’s Resolutions. Right now you’re on a 2 month sabbatical from that diet you started 2 ½ months ago, most likely telling yourself that if you’re going to die from a coronary clogged induced heart explosion, then by-God you’re going to die well fed (read: fat) and happy.

I’m taking the other tact, “well, I’m really busy right now sitting in front of this computer and all. Maybe I’ll have time when summer comes around.” That’s right, you (and me) just keep putting that one thing off for just a bit longer. I’m sure soon we’ll have more time. We’re not going to be like those previous generations who always made plans to accomplish things in life but just never had time. I’m sure I’ll get all those bucket list items accomplished someday. It’ll just take a while. The problem right now is a lot of my friends are getting married and I’m doing my thing here in Iowa and soon they’re going to start having kids and that’s a big part of your life you know? And the younger generation, well, they just don’t want to hear it. Everything is electronic this and digital that. Just try getting a word in with a pseudo-zombie obsessed with tweeting a picture of the latest cute thing their cat did; all with a pair of headphones in no less. Next thing you know you’re sitting at home thinking about the words you never said and how you wish you could do it all over again.” I miss you. Even when I’m with you”.… What’s that? What are we talking about again? Okay yeah, I haven’t tried a hand stand pushup in a while.

It's been so long

Well, moving on. I have somewhat kept up with my other resolution of the dream journal to incite lucid dreams. Full disclosure: the lucid dreams have not happened yet, but I am keeping up with the dream journal in a half-hazard fashion. The one problem I have is I’ll often have a crazy/weird/awesome dream in the middle of the night and then wake up at 4am. At this point I have two choices: I can a) fully awaken myself and write the dream down or b) go back to sleep and write everything down when I get up later. Of course, after I go back to sleep I forget everything about the dream and end up writing nothing down. Why is a dream journal so complicated! Right now I rely on the rock-solid method of hoping the last dream of the night is a good one and it ends right as I wake up to my alarm.

If you want to entertain yourself, keep a dream journal and then periodically go back and read some of the things you’ve written down. Here’s a sample from my own journal on February 26th, “I was a coach and in the military. Mike White [Coe VP] was my superior and was going to transfer me to help with his research on bullets. The gun powder was bad and looked like crushed red pepper. I talked to Mark Kroll on the way back to my apartment about his improving game. Someone was cleaning my apartment when I got back.” Why is that my dream? Is there something wrong with this dream or is that normal? Do most people have dreams that make no sense?

If you keep a dream journal, you too can be tormented by increasingly paranoid thoughts about your abnormalities. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I can hear my dreams. They're plotting against me

Earlier this year I detailed my weekly Wendesday doubles match paired with Tom Jennings against the number 1 doubles team of Noah Sprinkel and Curtis Newman. I am sad to report that I was on the losing end of the match on Wednesday. Interestingly enough, even though we lost on Wednesday we still have the overall advantage in wins but we’re actually trailing in number of sets won. As of now, Noah and Curtis have won 7 sets while me and Tom have won 5. I’m going to chock this up to a couple of wily veterans figuring out a way to win. Either that or I’ll just ignore the illogical implications of this mathematical conundrum the same way I did in high school math class, “Oh God, she’s writing numbers on the board again! Quick, shut down all thinking and pretend it’s not real! Blah blah blah blah”

Not listening. Not listening

The other story of note involves the GameShow Network. This week was a light one for watching as annoying things like school and tennis are starting to demand more time. Luckily we got in a few marathon sessions before leaving for Florida on spring break. The day before leaving we watched 6 hours of Family Feud (no that is not a typo, 6 hours!). This probably beats the old world record by a good 6 hours. That much Family Feud is unhealthy, trust me. They should put up a disclaimer for the dozen of people watching the show that Family Feud will lead to worthless-human-being syndrome. It’s apparently affecting millions of people already.

Tune in next week for some March Madness talk.

Things We Learned in Florida

I know all of you were going into withdrawals last week due to my absence from the blog and were developing early stage dementia due to the lack of sarcasm in your life. Well you can stop frothing at the mouth and sticking your remote in the freezer because your annual dose of medication is here.

Two weeks ago I talked about some bucket list items that still need completion before I play that final match in the sky. One of the main items on that list was visiting every 50 states and the spring break trip helped the cause by taking one more state off the list. Yes, Florida is now highlighted on the big board!

Only 28 more to go!

Whenever you go to a new place there’s always a chance to learn about yourself. For example, going to Los Angeles taught me that I dislike Los Angeles and going to Alabama proved my intuition correct that I never want to live there. I learned quite a few things in Florida which I will be more than happy to enlighten you with.

I Like Losing Things on Spring Break
This one will come as no surprise to my mother, but I have an absolute affinity for losing things on spring break trips. This year I lost my hat, not once, but twice; at the same tennis center no less. The first time Mike Janssen’s mother picked it up thinking it was one of the players. Sadly the hat belonged to one of the “adults” in charge: me (as scary as that sounds). Upon receiving my hat I promptly left it at the same tennis center the very next day. I remembered the hat only after I left the complex, so I did the responsible thing and asked freshmen Zack Decker (aka Butters) to grab it for me.

It was actually a good spring break in that I didn’t lose anything permanently which is not usually the case. Two years ago on a spring break tennis trip to California I was the proud owner of a black fitted team hat and Nike team pullover. I was so proud of these items that I decided to unknowingly donate them to some nice person working for Avis at LAX. You can imagine my surprise when I got home after the trip and realized that I had left some of my most prized possessions in the rental car. This, however, is not as bad as what I did my freshmen year of college on a trip to St. Louis. We spent one night in a hotel on the way to St. Louis and checked out the following morning to continue our journey. When we arrived to play Washington University I was perplexed by my inability to find my court shoes in my bag. It was at this time that I had a revelation: I left my shoes in the hotel room!! It’s no wonder that I lost my matches to Wash U and that other team we played during the trip. Who was that? Oh yeah, some school from Iowa called Coe College. Now you all know why I lost that doubles match to Tom Jennings. And to top it all off, my shoes were full of my winnings from our previous day’s poker game. I lost my shoes and the ability to buy more.

You're doing this all wrong Fernando, trust me

My Phone Hates Florida
I enjoyed my time in Florida like an old person at a 4pm dinner. My phone, on the other hand, did not like it one bit. The thing really has a mind of its own. Normally I have good battery life, but the second we landed in Florida my phone went on a power binge that sucked everything out of it in 4 hours. It’s like upon realizing we were in a different time zone my phone became a power hungry, self-destructive force that would make Kim Jong Un proud.

So my phone is Dennis Rodman?

On those rare occasions when my phone wasn't being a drain on the local electrical grid it decided since there was so much sunshine in Florida I didn’t really need a backlight to see the screen. That’s more of a luxury, really. When I received text messages I had to use the voice function on my phone, so it would read them to me. There is never a more awkward situation than having your incoming text messages pronounced out loud by an electronic voice in a hotel lobby. It is simultaneously frustrating and thrilling to respond to a text message from a random number in your contacts list. I just assumed all incoming messages were from my mother, so I ended every reply with an “I love you” just to be on the safe side.

I Have Corrupted the Team
I’m like a bad computer system and come prepackaged with a variety of sayings to pull out at inappropriate times. Most of these are from my own playing days and include a cheer for every situation on the tennis court. If you break your opponent, that is the opportune time to inform EVERYONE within a mile vicinity of this accomplishment by yell, “That’s a break Kohawks!!” If you happen to win the set then the amplitude is obviously doubled with the yelling of, “That’s a set Kohawks!!!!” (double the exclamation marks means double the sound). This works in a variety of different situations. After screaming about a break and subsequently holding you can scream “double flip” as you run to flip the score card to indicate the updated score. Of course there are other things to yell even if a break or set hasn’t been won. It’s always a good idea to randomly inform the other team that “the pain train is coming”; “you’re gonna get it”; and if you’re feeling especially sprite, “They Don’t Want It!!”

You can imagine my happiness/dismay when during one particular match I heard court 1 yelling about a break, court 2 yelling double flip, and court 3 informing us all of how much the other team did not want it. I realized then that I have created a monster.

My God, what have I done!?

And it extends past on court exclamations. According to Kris, Coach Rodgers now talks with a little more twang during team huddles, and he’s not even aware of it (I’m a little proud of that one). My most pervasive influence on the team is with saying the words “my bad.” I unknowingly instituted this sometime this semester and we say it with a special twist: instead of properly pronouncing the “a” we drag out the vowel to almost an “e” and nearly give this 3 letter word 2 syllables. It’s like melding the word “bad” and “bed” into a new word, “baaeeed.” What’s sad is this pronunciation is so ingrained we don’t realize we’re doing it anymore. I came to this conclusion after a text message from my aforementioned phone-of-satan at 2:00am. When my phone went off the other coaches looked up at me and I, while still half asleep, calmly said, “my baaeeed” and reached for my phone.

Rankings....

The ITA Office in Princeton, NJ, made the decision to NOT publish Regional rankings today. This is likely due to the fact that the Northeast Region just began play on March 1st and therefore not many matches have been played. Here in the Central Region, 81 of the 99 schools sponsoring Men's Tennis have played matches! As such, there exists enough data to subjectively rank the Region. Without further fanfare, here they are, #1 through #30/

Central MT Rankings 3/13/13

So after two more weeks of play, the Central Region rankings are starting to shape up a bit more realistically. The ITA Committee Rankings are to be released tomorrow. I expect these to rank the top 20 schools(out of 99) in the Region. Going forward into the next ranking period(3/15-3/28) points will be awarded based on the ITA Rankings 1-20, plus my 21-30 rankings. Will post the complete 1-30 listings by the end of the week.

Now as to the KTeR rankings for this week: A School with a small sample size(ie Denison/Wartburg) is incorrectly ranked by sheer lack of data. Another school(Gustavus/Luther) may be too low because they have not yet played the bulk of their "quality" matches. Anyways, for what it is worth, here is the 3/13/13 edition.

When/if time, I will put together a complete Beach Day video.  To include the Pelican attack on our (wo)men while laying out.....induced by fellow teammates by surrounding them with crumbs.  Also to include Daken's 60-70 yard completed pass during two-hand touch football.

In the meantime, have a few pictures/videos for you:

Beach Day Friday

Coach and I again sit in the breakfast area working, awaiting the presence of our first player.  My guess would be Curtis.....although Scott and Woolf have been consistent early risers as well.
(Update:  Woolf showed first just after 8 AM; Scott second at 8:55, Daken at 9:11, Michelle texted at 9:12 for 4th and CN, NS, YI and GB showed as a group to take 5th collectively, Diannah 6th)

Friday has historically always been a beach day for the kids.  Weather appears to be appropriate enough.  I'm guessing a mid-day departure with 20+ players (a few may stay behind with parents), myself and Brad.  Coach, on the other hand, will likely meander back to the tennis courts to watch matches.....apparently, the 13 matches he coached in the last 4 days was not enough.  :)

Pictures and/or a video of today's adventure to come!

Received a text from Noah last night with the caption, "After a big day, Ryan gets a half pint of ice cream!"  (first year, Ryan Hickman, had clinched the 5-4 victory over D2 Grand Valley State University with a 3 set singles victory)

As referenced in a February post, Jordan had her own cheering section in Hanover Park, IL (played Calvin and Wheaton).  Pictured below:  Jordan's mother and father from Pekin, IL, her brother and sister-in-law from Peoria, IL, Aunt from Woodridge, IL, Uncle from Western Springs, IL, Grandmother and Grandfather from Mattoon, IL and Aunt and Uncle from Mattoon, IL.  A Thank You from Kohawk Tennis for your support of Jordan, and our program!
