Health & Wellness Wednesday - Beans & Greens

I was recently referenced to the following blog: The Healthy Dessert Blog
Specifically, the recipe linked below.....a cookie pie (or bar form if preferred) made with garbanzo BEANS (one of the original 14 SuperFoods). Personally, I'm not much of a dessert eater myself, and I got mixed reviews from the dessert eaters in my family this past Easter weekend. Nonetheless, Michelle and I found it to be quite good.

This month's Tennis Magazine included an article on facts and fiction of organic foods. The four FACTS:
  • Organic Foods May Be Better for Your Physique - Apparently, "research shows that pesticide residues from conventionally grown foods may be a factor in rising obesity rates."
  • Organic Foods Provide More Nutrients
  • Organic Food Tastes Better
  • Organic Benefits Go Beyond Nutrition - "Organically produced foods cannot be given antibiotics," which saves our ground and water systems from "an unhealthy domino effect."
To build on that last point, health and wellness encompasses the environment that surrounds us. I was intrigued by the idea of a Zero Waste Home. Although an extreme approach, I challenge each of you to try and incorporate 3 of the linked Tips into your own lifestyle. I vouch to actually start using the reusable grocery totes that I have, to shop the Farmers' Markets this Summer (already on my calendar) and in general, REFUSE (trying to declutter my house anyway; no sense in adding to the mess!).

This website is pretty neat also: Practically Green
How it Works: Want to live healthy, green and sustainable but not sure where to start? Join now, see your score, get personalized suggestions for steps to take and products to use.

Finally, a statement related to the other type of green - envy! According to Family Circle Magazine, "while coveting gives the brain a boost (sharpens both memory and attention to detail), it also creates mental fatigue. Bottom line: Be grateful for what you've got!"

Health & Wellness Wednesday - Notes & OATS

Noah, Curtis and I started Andy Murray like track workouts today. Not surprisingly, Murray's workouts have a striking resemblance to Coach Rodgers' old school workouts (and once his own) that the teams periodically experience.....on top of our modern Insanity (or Krisanity) of course!

As a start, we did 8 200's with a jog 200 in between each. Noah cruised with times just over 30 throughout. Curtis and I closer to 33 to start, escalating to 36-39, but finishing at 35. Back on the field with those guys tomorrow! A thank you to Noah for the push to be better; it will help prep me for Summer tournament play! Recently signed up for the Cleveland $10K to start on June 16th......just over 10 weeks out!

I also signed up for the Des Moines IMT half marathon on Oct 21st. My friend and training partner, Kylie, is the force behind that decision. Haven't come around to the idea of actually training for that though.....yet!

GRANOLA

With oats being one of the original 14 Superfoods (and ranked up there with pumpkin in regards to fiber content), I have now made the following granola recipe a couple of times. It is directly from the Superfoods book!

1 1/2 cups old fashioned oatmeal
1 1/2 teaspoons canola oil (I substituted extra virgin olive oil)
1 1/2 Tablespoons honey (heated in microwave 8-10 seconds for ease in mixing)
2 Tablespoons chopped walnuts
1/8 cup dried blueberries
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Variation: Substitute almonds for the walnuts, and dried cranberries for the blueberries.

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Bake at 300 for 20 minutes (stirring every 5 minutes).

Given the substituted EVOO, 5 SUPERFOODS in total!

Easy Quiche (from Lisa Stroschine - Instructional Technologist at Coe)

4 whole wheat tortillas
6 eggs
1/2 c. fat-free cottage cheese
1/4 c. milk
1/2 c. shredded cheddar cheese
1 tsp chili powder
chopped fresh cilantro to taste
salt & pepper to taste
Veggies: Use what you have on hand. I sauteed a few leftover boiled potatoes with chopped red onion & green pepper. Just before I took it out of the pan, I tossed in some shredded fresh spinach.

Arrange the four tortillas in the bottom of a pie plate. They'll hang over the edge - that's OK.
Beat eggs, cottage cheese, milk and spices together. Stir in shredded cheese.
Arrange veggies in the bottom of the pie plate on top of the tortillas. Pour the egg mixture on top.
Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes until eggs are set. Optional garnishes: fresh cilantro, diced tomatoes, salsa.

Overnight Refrigerator Oatmeal (from Lisa Stroschine - Instructional Technologist at Coe)

Put all of the ingredients below in a jar with a lid, shake it up and put it in the fridge. It's ready to eat the next morning. You can make up a whole week's worth in advance and just grab a jar each morning!

1/2 cup oatmeal
1/3 cup Greek yogurt
1/4 cup milk
(now add what you like)
1 T. chia seeds
honey or agave to sweeten (especially necessary if you're using plain Greek yogurt)
fresh or frozen fruits

Variation: Make this in an almost-empty peanutbutter jar!

State of Kohawk Tennis

Been quite a while since I opined on the current season, so time to jump in and get started! April has arrived, the weather is still nice in Cedar Rapids, and both Teams working diligently towards upcoming challenges.

The Women, due to lousy scheduling on my part(working to rectify for 2013) will be facing the 18-1 Pioneers of Grinnell College on Saturday after 3 weeks apart from competition. On the bright side the Ladies have been working hard on conditioning, doubles and GPA's! Following Grinnell, Kalamazoo and Hope College loom prior to our hosting the AQ event for the Iowa Conference. Outcomes are never guaranteed, but we will be prepared for the challenges ahead!

The Men just wrapped their annual trip to the KSI hosted by Wabash College. A close 3rd place finish and the competitive opportunities for 8 players made this a positive trek. Up ahead will be the usual challenges of April when we compete against highly accomplished tennis programs, beginning Saturday with Grinnell. We are temporarily out of the Regional rankings despite our 16-3 record. Grinnell, Carleton, Kalamazoo, Elmhurst, Luther and Whitewater loom ahead this month; all of whom are ranked higher. Senior Victor Khristenko, who has been felled the past 6 weeks by mononucleosis, has just been cleared to practice. The return to form of VK will help us, although it may well take time for him to regain his physicality. Like the Ladies, the Men have been emphasizing conditioning, doubles and hopefully GPA's!

It has been a blast working with both squads. Coach Kris and Coach Rob have accepted increased responsibilities and are on court all the time. I have been stringing so much, arthritis has kicked in! Kind of a good thing I guess.....it means players are on the court a lot!

Keep an eye on the Blog....Kohawk Tennis could be ready to make a move!!!!

Summer Programming

Coe College announces the offering of Summer Programming! The document in the right hand sidebar (Current Offerings) has been updated with complete details, private lessons, overnight camp, fitness classes, etc. The highlight, and addition to our programming includes youth clinics that will incorporate the principles of Blue Zones and Wayne Bryan's book, “Raising Your Child to be a Champion in Athletics, Arts and Academics.” An in-depth description below. Before you get there, be sure to read the previous post by Coach Rodgers with men's tennis results from the Kerry Seward Invitational this past weekend.

Youth Clinics - Health, Well-Being and Fun!!

In promotion of the Cedar Rapids Blue Zones project, Coe College announces the offering of summer clinics for youngsters (ages 4 – 15). The clinics will be grounded in the LIFETIME sport of tennis, but will address/focus on overall health and well-being. A variety of other sports/activities will be played as well. Lead and directed by the Coe College Coaching Staff, children will be exposed to many of the principles set forth within the Power 9 (Just Move, Purpose, Down Shift, Plant Slant). Assistant Tennis Coach, Kris Diehl, has a 4 year old herself, and knows how to entertain, whilst retaining an educational environment.

Further, the atmosphere/culture will be centered around the concepts put forth in Wayne Bryan’s book, “Raising Your Child to be a Champion in Athletics, Arts and Academics.” Wayne Bryan is the father to professional tennis players, Mike & Bob Byran. Goal setting, side-door motivation, less is more, praise, positive reinforcement, steps of progression, a daily schedule, and the instilment of values will all be incorporated.

Example of a given day’s schedule:

9 – 9:20 – Introductions/Attendance, Dynamic Warm-Up, Static Stretching (Yoga Included)

9:20 – 9:40 – On-Court Activity (ex: throwing and catching)

9:40 – 10 – On-Court Activity (ex: balance or agility)

10 – 10:30 – Classroom Activity (ex: discuss goal-setting, children goal-set themselves)

10:30 – 10:45 – Snack (a SuperFood and/or nutritious; discuss why particular snack is healthy)

10:45 – 11:15 – Field Activity (ex: kickball) and/or Fitness

11:15 – 11:35 – On-Court Activity (ex: volleys)

11:35 – 12:00 – On-Court Games

In an attempt to jumpstart Coe’s innovative and cutting edge programming, Coe is offering an immediate 25% discount (included in the pricing below) to an already reduced rate. Next year’s rates will be close to double.

Further, the following discounts apply if sign up for multiple sessions (i.e. both of your children sign up for the same session or the same child signs up for the week of June 4th and June 11th, etc).

2 Sessions ($12 discount), 3 Sessions ($18 discount), 4 Sessions ($24 discount), 5 Sessions ($30 discount), 6 Sessions ($36 discount), 7 Sessions ($42 discount), 8 Sessions ($48 discount)
