Health & Wellness Wednesday - Dietetic Intern

Coe has had a dietetic intern (Brian Scheil) on campus for almost two weeks now. Brian has served many groups on campus thus far; met with Coe College Dining Services, served as a resource at Coe's Health Fair, individual wellness classes, etc. This week, he held separate question and answer sessions for the volleyball, women's basketball, wrestling and today, tennis teams!

I will thus expound upon that meeting as a tie in to Health & Wellness Wednesday!

In my opinion, the most important takeaway of the day from Brian.....examine your nutrition, cut out half the sugar and replace that with complex carbs; your performance will increase. Brian included rice, potatoes, etc within his list of complex carbs. Given my understanding of Fit for Life, I personally would stick to whole wheat and whole grain options....an excellent list of complex carbs here:
http://www.livestrong.com/article/27398-list-complex-carbohydrates-foods/

Specific Questions asked by Coe Tennis players....the answers a combination of Brian's response, my own understanding and at times, a bit of research.

Q: I love cereal and eat it most every morning. What types of cereal should I be eating?
A: Cereal that is low in sugar. Whole wheat, or whole grain when possible. Bran is another good option. As is oatmeal if a satisfactory substitute. For specific types:
http://www.livestrong.com/article/101223-top-healthiest-cereals/
Personally, I am fan of Cheerios and Special K Protein Plus.
Healthy options that I have found to be less readily available with the top choice being Post Shredded Wheat Original:
http://www.care2.com/greenliving/10-healthiest-breakfast-cereals.html

Q: What are your thoughts on supplements and energy drinks?
A: Other than fish oil (and a multi-vitamin if desired) being encouraged as a supplement, Brian was adamant that the best way to maximize energy is to eat a well balanced diet and get plenty of sleep. He also shared an interesting fact that I was unaware of.....if taking vitamins, and your urine is bright yellow, your body is excreting what isn't being absorbed. A more in depth explanation here.

FITNESS CLASS

Deviating topics here....despite the grumbles received, ran my class through their periodic fitness test on Monday. Very pleased to say that everyone is still making progress! I have included the results of two members (and myself) below, and the % increase over time for the 8 different exercises.

Quote of the week from a member of my fitness class....."Maybe we'll doing something easy today like an Insanity video.....Kris is tougher than Shaun T." I share that with all of you not to toot my own horn, but rather to show the level of fitness my class has attained; it wasn't too long ago that an Insanity video was considered EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. Will have to up my own game to keep pushing these folks!

A Day of Kohawk Tennis

7 AM - Coach's likely arrival time to the Racquet Center with daily computer work and admin duties ahead.

8:45 AM - Kris back to her house after dropping Emmie off at school. On the computer working!

9:30 AM - Coach picks up coffee and runs daily errands on campus (mailroom, etc).

10:30 AM - With 6+ hours of physical activity ahead, Kris stops at Sam's Club to get a soft pretzel and fountain Coke (2 of her 12 weaknesses from a nutrition standpoint). Her intelligent indulgence took a turn for the worse; Sam's Club now has a new pretzel supplier and they are NOT up to par! Consider the phrase intelligent indulgence first coined and patented here:
a. The act, or an instance of gratification, using sound judgment and rationality as the justification or basis for.
ex: consuming my mother's coffee cake (made with WHOLE WHEAT flour)
ex: consuming my mother's almond roca (layer of DARK CHOCOLATE on top)
ex: inhaling mass amounts of sugar via soda pop, and enriched flour (breaks down to sugar) in soft pretzel form immediately before 6 hours of physical activity
2 more of my weaknesses now exposed. As a coach, I don't necessarily condone the latter example. Although, I recently read the following article which did make me feel better about the act. Sorry, sidetracked.....back to the schedule.

11 AM - Kris on court with Nikki Kuehl (former #1 at Coe) per her own training.

12 PM - Rob on court with Hiroshi. Kris on court with Hoffmann.

12:30 PM - Coach on court with JR.

1 PM - Kris's fitness class.

1:30 PM - Coach on court with Daken. JR and Mike White (the Vice President of Administrative Services at Coe, and an accomplished player himself) on court. Food for Rob.

2 PM - Coach on court with Kris. Hiroshi still on court....now with Julien (a foreign exchange student on the team the year prior) and 2 other classmates. Rob practice planning a doubles segment.

3 PM - Rob on court with Noah. Jackie on court hitting serves.

3:30 PM - PRACTICE! 3 coaches and all players on court.

5:15 PM - Practice wraps up. Daken and Sean stay. Leo and Rob stay.

6 PM - Rob has a lesson.

7 PM - Rob on court with Klaas.

10 PM - Rob's likely departure time from the Racquet Center. Kris typing this post; more recruiting work to do before bed.

Total # of text messages I received from players throughout the day: 13
Total # of text messages I received from tennis alums throughout the day: 9
Total # of text messages or emails I received from Coach today: 12

Can't imagine what those #'s would be if Rob and Coach included......

Somewhere in that mix, racquets strung (by Rob and Coach), rain, more rain and a self imposed timed mile.

Emmie's quote of the day after bumping into Wrigley (one of our dogs)...."Sorry Mommy, I broke Wrigley."

Kohawk Happenings (Wednesday's Health & Wellness Included)

The most recent Tennis magazine quickly caught my attention; The Fitness Issue! Three additional foods are touted as being SuperFoods: Seaweed (protects heart and waistline), Cupuacu (fights aging and boosts energy) and Miso (protects the prostate, breasts and lungs). That particular article also gave a great definition of SuperFoods which I'll reiterate here since I'm always hyping and piping the term: a food with nutrients or natural compounds that go to work in your body to optimize health or prevent disease.

The magazine also had a 10 step workout designed specifically for tennis players. Pleased to see that parts of it are already incorporated into my own, class and team conditioning. However, attained new ideas also!

Although I do not believe in the term "dieting" or any type of fad related to, my parents jumpstarted their nutrition kick with the Cabbage Soup Diet Plan last week and had success with it. Success is in italics because I again state my disagreement with the concept and/or results tied specifically to weight loss. Nonetheless, the recipe itself is quite healthy, and has many Super/Magic foods within. Also, the results seem to have spurred my parents into modifying their nutrition plan moving forward into one that is better balanced and truly geared towards health and well-being! I am thrilled about that....have I mentioned how great family is (parents, family and extended family).....can't imagine life without them!

A week long trip to the Dominican Republic ahead for many members of the Kohawk Tennis extended family, and my fitness class. Enjoy!!

A regular in my fitness class, Wendy Ausdemore (Recruiting & Office Assistant within the Athletic Administration at Coe and former University of Iowa basketball player), ran an impressive mile time as part of a boot camp training program. No doubt in my mind that she will better that time in weeks/months ahead also!

Thought I had previously shared this picture, but my fitness class informed me that I had not. One evening this past Fall, Emmie insisted on joining me for part of a workout (the alternative was bedtime). She immediately dropped into plank form. To rebut the obvious implication - no, she is not in training.......yet!

Doug, or Mr. T as he was referred to, is now clean shaven; lost the mohawk pictured below (as part of the 4 AM Waffle House crew). He looks much better, and appeared to be quicker on the court today! Speaking of practice, I overheard Doug badgering Curtis about the fact that Curtis showed little signs of sweat during practice. Curtis responded that he simply doesn't sweat very much, and attributed that to his darker complexion. Doug balked at his explanation.

At about the midway point of the 2012 season the Iowa Conference Men's Tennis season is shaping up to be a very competitive race to the finish.

Team Dinner

Women's (significant others included) team dinner at Emmie and I's house this evening. Managed to get 10+ superfoods/magic foods on their plate: cabbage salad with peanut vinaigrette and slivered almonds, asparagus, whole wheat spaghetti, homemade spaghetti sauce (tomatoes; no sugar), whole wheat garlic bread and pumpkin bread for dessert. I linked the recipe for the pumpkin bread as it was excellent; I used the healthiest option/recipe at the bottom which includes 4 superfoods/superspices in total!

ALL gave me a hard time throughout dinner, but seemed to enjoy nonetheless! Hoff and Tyler even browsed the Magic Foods book!

Emmie entertained; she made sure to include everyone in her nightly dance party and got quite a few laughs when answered the door in her birthday suit (when transitioning from her dress up clothes to pajamas). Greg, Tai's boyfriend, was taken aback to say the least.

The men (10 AM) and women (2 PM) take on Augustana tomorrow. Recent graduate and Kohawk standout, Scott Stegemann, serves as their Assistant Coach. It will be nice to have Scott back on campus with us, albeit in the wrong uniform.

Back to Work!

Looks like we brought the warm, sunny weather back to Iowa from our Spring Break trip to Florida! Our nets are already up to take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather--below, Coach Rodgers is pictured adjusting net height. Yesterday and today the teams have been off from hitting, but Kris has run them through conditioning workouts to continue improving fitness--below, the men and women are stretching before a team run. Back to tennis tomorrow in preparation for Saturday's matches at home against Augustana.

Set out to find local BBQ for Coach Kris & Klaas. Drove around in circles and never found the intended destination. Thai food it is per Coach Rob's liking.

Smyrna Beach

Teams didn't expect to be conditioned today, but full squad ultimate frisbee game on the beach served just that purpose! Relaxing now. They certainly earned the down time. Very proud of their performance, and overall progress, this past week!

Florida - Day 4 (Tuesday)

Had another morning to spend at the hotel; coaches and players alike have had no problem arising early for the breakfast spread. For the the coaches, seems to be the only time of day we get to eat. The three of us did sneak in a few pieces of German Dark Whole Wheat bread (from the Pepperidge Farm Thrift Store of course) between men's matches, which served as dinner. No complaints in that respect though; get to coach and are presented with opportunities to teach ALL DAY long!

Arrived at Lake Cane late morning where the women took on Methodist College, and the men Alfred University.
Women: Coe 4 Methodist 5
Men: Coe 7 Alfred 2

Trekked back the hotel for a few, before venturing out once again for the night match. The atmosphere was truly electric. Under the lights. Large fan base of support. High intensity, high energy doubles followed by strong and relentless singles play. Proud of the men for responding to the slight doubles deficit (down 1-2) professionally, and with pride in representing themselves, teammates, Kohawk Tennis and Coe College. Wrapped up play around 10 PM with a 5-4 victory over Ohio Northern.

Coe women warming up for their match against Methodist at 11:30. The men to start 30 minutes later at noon.

Florida - Day 3 (Monday)

Opened up Spring Break competition with 8 AM matches for both the men and women. A bit of a chill in the air during warm-ups, but it quickly warmed to short sleeve weather and was gorgeous the remainder of the day.

The women started with singles (a rarity in the college format, but necessary due to court availability). Having taken 5 of the singles points, they clinched the match and had a rare opportunity to play doubles under little pressure, yet in a competitive setting. And against a fairly talented Berry College team despite what the singles outcome may dictate. The ladies embraced the challenge, tried some new things and made themselves better doubles players!

I saw very little of men's match given my focus on the women. I will say that their energy on the doubles court was noted by all 3 coaches!

Men v Berry 8-1
Women v Berry 8-1

Returned to the hotel mid-day. Coaches reported scores, and snuck their work-out in.

Mid-afternoon departure for Lake Cane to play Colby-Sawyer with the men's team. A number of the women spent the afternoon with family. Jackie and Jordan jumped in the vans with us. JR introduced us to the yellow car, slugbug and PT Cruiser game on the way there. A heated battle ensued both on the way to and from the courts. Jackie the clear MVP; Leo not so much (his contribution was negative given miscalls).

Sean's dad, Bryan, arrived from Germany - he recently retired from the Air Force; Sean's Mom remains stationed in Germany and serves as a Colonel. Bryan played tennis at the University of Iowa. Believe he and Betty Damisch were set to take on Chuck and Janet Schupbach on the mixed doubles court Tuesday morning.

Florida - Day 2

Practice from noon to 2. Followed that up with lunch at the courts (provided by the parents; thanks!) and the watching of various matches taking place at Sanlando Park.

A quick stop with the ladies at the Pepperidge Farm Thrift store on the way back to the hotel. Goldfish galore....picked up some baby, space shaped and of course, whole grain goldfish for Emmie! Quite a selection of bread also.

Coach and I headed back to the courts for the second day in a row to get our own hit in. I was on top of my game; focus and footwork was likely at a high for the year. Not pleased per se; simply trying to figure out how to replicate daily!

Coach Rob, and the men, took in parts of NBA Sunday. And Team CoeCoe received their much deserved smoothies.

Jackie displayed her cosmetology skill; helping both Michelle and I (with some reluctance, and a 15 minute time limit) do our hair for dinner.

Dinner at the Longhorn Steakhouse. Parents, grandparents, players, alumni and coaches included. Reservation for 36. Pictures from dinner, and throughout the day, added to the Spring Break album on Facebook.

8 AM matches at Sanlando for both the men and women tomorrow morning. A second men's match at 3:30 at Lake Cane. Live scoring on the blog throughout the day!

Team CoeCoe rewarded with smoothies!

This evening at the hotel...

Florida - Day 1

Spent the morning at the hotel. All 3 coaches up early and walking around the lake; discussing the week ahead! Excellent breakfast spread....omelet station appears to be popular, and my favorite from last year, the corned beef hash (not healthy, but I do consume in moderation of course!). The busboy asked us if we were here on vacation; Coach was quick to reply, "Not quite."

10:30 - 2:30 practice. Players rotated amongst the courts available. 2 hours of quality adjustment time followed by the 90 + minute Relay Race referenced by Rob below.

Teams:
CoeCoe (CC) - Tai, Sara, Noah, Tyler, Klaas, Jeff
Kris's *#$%&@$ (KB) - Jackie, Jordan, Mike, Sean, Leo, Daken
BoBo's Bruisers (BB) - Michelle, Hoff, JR, Doug, Curtis, Woolf

Round 1 -
Total time to exit the park, run out to the main street and back to the pavilion. Minus 5 seconds for each point acquired via differential in doubles tiebreakers.
CC - 7:50 (lost all 6 groundstroke games and were ridiculed for ending round 1 with the best time, despite their inability to compete)
BB - 8:06 (9:31 minus 17 points)
KB - 8:12 (9:42 minus 18 points)

Round 2 -
Total time to FIND the fitness course (within the park), complete various activities within, and return to the pavilion. Minus 5 seconds for each point acquired via differential in singles tiebreakers.
CC - 2:29 (5:34 minus 37 points - their response to having been previously ridiculed)
BB - 5:50 (6:00 minus 2 points)
KB - 6:10 (8:40 minus 30 points)

Round 3 -
Total time to consume 1 gallon of water amongst the team....waterfall style:
CC - 1:00 (it was quite impressive!)
KB - 1:50
BB - 2:22

Total Times:
Winners taken for smoothies. Second place received gatorade. Third place a box of Whole Grain Goldfish.
CC - 11:19
KB - 16:12
BB - 16:18

Updated Spring Break album on Facebook. Additional pictures from the pool this afternoon:

Team CoeCoe wins!
